Boozy Shopping in NYC: J. Crew Men's Shop

August 21, 2008 at 12:00 PM | 1 Comment

Setting foot into J. Crew's new Tribeca Mens Shop, you might feel like you just walked into a Wes Anderson movie. Housed in the former Liquor Bar space, the store does the preppy, Americana, boarding school style to a tee.

Mixing fantasy and reality, shopping and hanging out, the store envelops shoppers in a secret world of club ties, loafers and booze. The store is J. Crew's first men's only location, and mixes J. Crew products and a selection of partner items. Store designer Andy Spade was inspired by the White Horse Tavern in New York City's West Village and kept as much of the bar vibe as possible. You can even pour yourself a drink while browsing.

The Mens Shop opens this weekend. Future plans include seminars on wine, chess and figure drawing based on Andy Spade's forthcoming book What a Man Should Know.

    Guys' Ideal Shopping = Hooter's + Product?

Great story about J. Crew's move into men's shops. In 2005, we did qualitative research for a leading shoe brand to understand men's ideal shoe shopping experience. Their answer: Give us Hooters with shoes. Men told us they wanted a bar-like setting with young, attractive cocktail waitresses in short outfits, and plasma screen TVs on the walls showing sports. We laughed, and everyone found that aspect of our findings amusing. While that client didn't act on them, others did (check out www.Knockout.net)

Sounds like Mickey Drexler and team have adapted the recipe in this first incarnation of the J. Crew men's shop. The clubbiness you describe and the ability to pour your own drink definitely fit. I'm glad to hear they dropped the cocktail waitresses and uniforms. At least for now!
