Back of the Envelope Travel Guide: The Del Mar Scene

August 20, 2008 at 12:00 PM | 0 Comments

When you think of horse racing you immediately think of the big guys like the Kentucky Derby or the Belmont. Or maybe you just picture grumpy old guys bickering over horses and swapping stories.

But at the Del Mar Racetrack and Fairgrounds, outside of San Diego, there's so much going on that they call it the Del Mar Scene.

What to Do:
Of course, there's the obvious play of taking in a race. Stop by the ATM before heading out to the track on August 24 for the Pacific Classic. Horses will compete for large purses, as well as a chance for admission into this year's Breeder's Cup events. Everyone knows, it's more fun when the horses are into it. On top of the race events, track organizers will "spoil" visitors with some free shirts. Admission is only $6 for adults.

OK, so racing's not your thing. How about attending the Microbrew Festival on August 30? More than 20 different brewers bring their 50 different beverages to the track where you'll be able to sample and indulge in your favorites. The tastings will cost you $3 for samples and $7 for full size beers. The fun starts in the infield Pacific Pavilion at 1 pm. Once you're sauced, just stumble over to the stage and take in the Devo concert. Yes, that Devo.

How to Get There:
Hop on the San Diego Freeway heading north in the hot ride you just picked up at San Diego Prestige. Choose from Bentleys, Aston Martins or maybe a Ferrari 360 Modena Spyder. That one will set you back a cool $1,400 for a 24-hour rental, but only includes 50 miles. Might want to get the supplemental insurance on it, too.

Where to Stay:
Make sure to valet your exotic auto when you roll up to the descriptively named Hilton San Diego/Del Mar. The hotel is only minutes away from the coast and it's directly across the street from the racetrack, so no matter you're tolerance for microbrews you'll be OK to get home after the Devo concert. Rates for the weekend of August 30 start at $229.
