Australia Travel: Sand, Surf and... Snow?

Where: Australia
August 15, 2008 at 9:33 AM | by amandak | 1 Comment

Skiing and snowboarding fans in eastern Australia are raving this year: The snow just keeps on coming and it's a perfect season to hit the slopes Down Under. Australia might not seem the obvious destination for a ski trip, but it has the advantage of being an off-season extravaganza for Northern Hemisphere snow fans.

Resorts in the Snowy Mountains in New South Wales and at Falls Creek in Victoria are all reporting much higher than average baseline snow and predicting more excellent months of skiing in 2008.

On top of that, the weather's reaching much further down the mountains than normal, with snow settling as low as 3,000 feet above sea level; that's getting skiing Aussies and ski-laden visitors pretty excited. Who says the land Down Under is only for surfers?

Get to the snow while the skiing is good!

I am going to add to those people raving about the snow: I've been living in Australia a year now, and of course never even knew that you could ski here until we went on a company-wide ski trip to Thredbo a few weeks ago (check out our pictures here: http://www.redballoondays.com.au/howitworks/life-at-redballoon.cfm)-- I know that we were very lucky but the snow was deep and powdery and amazing. We even had a few people who had never seen snow. If you go skiing one season, go this season for sure.
