Fringe Festival Travel: Our Picks for New York Fringe '08

Off-off-Broadway fanatics know we're already a week into the New York Fringe Festival, so it's high time we separated the thespians from the players. If you don't know where to start, balance your Fringe diet with our handy five categories of festival shows and recommendations for each. Hey, maybe you'll spot the next "Urinetown"!

The Necessary Political Slot: "Meanwhile, in Baghdad..." Combat news fatigue with this neatly inverted look at the residents of a besieged nation. Aug. 16 at 9 pm, Aug. 21 at 7:30 pm and Aug. 23 at 2:15 pm.

The Wacky Solo Slot: "My Salvation Has A First Name: A Wienermobile Journey." Comedian Robin Gelfenbien tells the real-life story of her year driving a giant hot dog. Aug. 17 at 2:30 pm and Aug. 21 at 3:30 pm.

The New York Lore Slot: Radiotheatre Presents "The Mole People." Tonight you could go into the subway and never be heard from again! This sonic symphony retells all the urban legends which will force you into cabs forever. Aug. 16 at 9:45 pm and Aug. 20 at 3:30 pm

The Kids These Days Slot: "Keep Your Eyes Open." We're looking forward to this day-in-the-life dramedy for the simple reason that it was written by fifth and sixth graders--tomorrow's Adam Rapps and David Mamets. Opens Aug. 20 at 6:45 pm

The Zany Pop-Culture Slot: "Perez Hilton Saves The Universe (Or At Least The Greater Los Angeles Area): The Musical." No need to confess that you read the Microsoft Paint-induced stylings of the man formerly known as Mario Lavandeira. In this impersonator-rich spectacle, he's Hollywood's gayest straight man. Aug. 16 at 5 pm and Aug. 22 at 7 pm
