Private Island Travel: Clingstone Mansion

August 13, 2008 at 11:30 AM | 2 Comments

Perched on a rocky island overlooking Narragansett Bay in Rhode Island is one of the most unique mansions you've ever seen. Clingstone, as it's aptly named, is 103 years old, but it looks like a million bucks.

This house, with the 360 degree views of the bay, cost a mere $36,982.99 when it was completed in 1905. Today, it offers a combination of grandiose opulence and rough beach house charm.

If this were your summer house, you could invite all your friends--and probably your entire family too. The place is huge with 23 rooms, including 10 bedrooms, are spread out over three floorings, giving everyone a place to crash. Picture windows are everywhere, making it seem like you're on a boat with water views abound.

Henry Wood, the owner, paid $3,600 for the mansion in 1961 after it had fallen into a state of disrepair. With the help of family and friends, he's completely restored the house.

Clingstone is only accessible by boat, and while it's currently a private residence, here's hoping that someday it will be open to outside guests.

    def a...

    party spot! No neighbors to bother you complaining the music is too loud. However, what happens when a storm comes? Does the water ever get higher? Hey if he gets bored he can always fish haha. either way, I'd buy this spot if I had an extra $37,000:)

    island house

    This is awesome, but leaves little room to do anything but be in the house!

    I just was in Lake Winnepesaukee, where little islands with one house abound. They look so cozy, but I can;t imagine the trouble that goes into having a generator, and thawing out from winter, etc. Also, at least on a lake it's nice swimming. Swimming in a bay often freaks me out... but I bet there's good clam digging.
