Back of the Envelope Guide: San Sebastián International Film Festival

August 13, 2008 at 12:45 PM | 0 Comments

Bring your best cool-guy attitude as you attend this year's San Sebastián International Film Festival, which runs September 18-27. Feature films from around Europe and the world will be on view, including "Frozen River," the winner of the Sundance Grand Jury Prize directed by American Courtney Hunt.

The seaside town has plenty to offer besides the films, too, including cool architecture, pintxos and the chance to mingle with the stars. Say hi to jury chair Jonathan Demme for us!

Where to Stay:
If you're attending a festival on the ocean, you might as well stay on the beach. That's where the Hotel Niza comes in. Situated only steps from the water at La Concha Bay, but still just 10 minutes from the city center, the place offers the best of both worlds. A stroll on the lively boardwalk come nightfall will be a perfect warm-up for your evening activities.

Where to Eat:
Save up your euros before your arrival and you'll be lucky enough to fill up at Arzak. As a three-Michelin-star restaurant, it's no doubt that you'll be in for a special treat as you feast on the latest in Basque cuisine. Cutting-edge as Arzak is, it's also steeped in tradition; it's been run by the same family since 1897.

Where to Drink:
Drinking here goes right along with eating, so no matter how tasty things were at dinner, save a little room for the pintxos, the Basque version of tapas. Casa Vergara in Old Town will suit you well, and it's somewhat low key during the week. Just remember what you had because when it's time to settle up, your tab is all based on your word.

Around 3 am, make your way over to Bataplán, the It place to see and be seen. The club goes all night and usually wraps things up around 7, just in time for you to head back to your hotel, grab breakfast and do it all over again.
