New NYC Restaurant: James

July 9, 2008 at 9:30 AM | 2 Comments

Once upon a time--like three years ago--New York's trendy restaurant scene stopped at the East River. Today, it extends well into Brooklyn, with some of the city's most upscale eateries in Cobble Hill, Park Slope and Fort Greene.

The foodie conquest of Brooklyn continues to spread even further into the borough, with the latest high-end restaurant row popping up this year in Prospect Heights. The newest entry is James Restaurant, a homey dining room set in a 100-year-old brownstone on St. Marks and Carlton Aves.

The menu is "old-world European influenced," with the expected Brooklyn organic/locavore touches in dishes like crispy sweetbreads with rhubarb honey glaze and dandelion greens, grass-fed beef burger with Cotswold cheese and organic Pennsylvania greens with sherry and black pepper dressing.

  1. James

I think someone needs to make a taste-test comparison of the NY James and the Philly James. Philly's James also has "a homey dining room" and is in an up-and-coming (read: cool) neighborhood.

The NY James is "old-world European influenced" and the Philly James serves "Italian and contemporary American" but it looks like both of them are into being farm-fresh.

Oh, and they both have nice typeface.

    Now I am hungry.

  1. A sour taste

I have been to James a few times, and while the food is adequate (read overpriced) I appreciated having a local restaurant I was proud to bring guests to when I wanted to impress. However, after my most recent experience, I have decided to take to the internet. I have never commented on a restaurant before, but my experience was so breathtaking, I felt the need to express myself. We were told it would be a 30-45 min wait, which turned into nearly 2 hours, and when we politely pointed out that this was disappointing, we were met with 'excuse me do you have a problem?' and 'i said it would be 30-45 or more'. Please understand that I have worked in hospitality for many years, as a waitress, hostess, etc... and I completely understand that you cannot control how long some tables may linger over their meals and drinks, however the attitude of the 'owner' was unbelievably rude! Four hours later, I am still fizzing! I cannot remember the last time I have been treated with such disrespect and I will never, ever go back there even if it were the last place on earth. If you fancy an enjoyable evening out, I would suggest anywhere but James. There are so many great restaurants in Park Slope.. it will not be difficult to replace.
