Movie Set Travel: Journey to the Center of the Earth

Old is new again with this week's pick, "Journey to the Center of the Earth." Based on the classic Jules Verne novel, the coolest thing about this one is that it was filmed for viewing entirely in 3-D. So grab your retro glasses and hit the theater for an action-packed flick.

An outcast science professor (Brendan Fraser) and his nephew are backpacking across Iceland when they come across a secret cave leading them into... the center of the earth! Determined to find out what happened to his missing brother, the professor and his young companion journey on and encounter all sorts of scary characters and never-before-seen adventures.

It's a family film (so no sex, drugs or violence) but we hear it's wildly entertaining and that the whole 3-D shtick really works. As parts of this one were actually shot in Iceland, here's some cool things to check out there:

Where To Stay: Hotel Skaftafell, Freysnes, Oeraefi Perched right next to Skaftafell National Park, this hotel's perfect for those interested in glacier day treks and mountain trips. The 63 ground-level rooms are very basic but cozy; they all have satellite TV. Don't miss the 2nd floor bar with an awesome view of the Vatnajökull glacier.

Where To Eat: Fjorukain Viking Restaurant, Fjorukrain Experience dining in true Viking style at this local favorite. Yes, it's touristy, but worth it. You'll sit in a dining-hall style room where a three-course meal of traditional fare (including mountain lamb and skyr, a yogurt-like dessert with fruit) is served and take in Viking performances where guests are "kidnapped" and taken to a cave to learn Viking combat.

What to See: Blue Lagoon, Grindavík Take a dip for your health in world-renowned natural mineral pools at Blue Lagoon. There are tons of hot springs and separate pools to choose from and you can also partake in special "skin clinics" with treatments for every ailment. Pack light and rent a bathing suit and towel on-site. Afterwards take in a sauna or steam bath and massage before boarding the thrice-daily bus back to Reykjavík. A day will set you back about $30.
