Official details on the seemingly random murder are still fuzzy, and Greyhound has only confirmed that "there was an incident." But witnesses say a man simply started slashing away at his sleeping seatmate with what's being described alternatively as "hunting knife" or a "butcher-type knife."

Passenger Garnet Caton, who was sitting right in front of the victim, described the attack:

There was a blood-curdling scream. I was just reading my book, and all of a sudden I heard it... Everybody got off the bus. Me and a trucker that stopped and the Greyhound driver ran up to the door to maybe see if the guy was still alive or we could help or something like that... And when we all got up, we saw that the guy was cutting off the [victim's] head.

The passengers were able to keep the alleged killer on the bus, and the driver was able to disable it to keep him from driving off. Some of the terrified passengers were loaded onto another bus to continue on, but others opted to shack up at a hotel in Brandon, Manitoba to meet with "chaplains and psychiatric nurses," says Canada's CBC news service.
