The weekend's finally here! By now you should've finalized some sort of holiday action plan, but here's one last Fourth of July suggestion: Independence, Iowa. With just over 6,000 residents at last count, the town is certainly small, but as they say, "Everybody observes the Fourth of July, we celebrate it!"
First things first: Check out the The Great Independence Pig Out located at the Riverwalk Parks. From 4:30 pm until 7 pm tonight, you'll get a free third of a pound pork burger in exchange for two non-perishable food items. Enjoy your burger while watching the 5th Annual Pork Burger World Championship, in which contestants have 10 minutes to consume as many burgers as possible for a chance at $500.
Tomorrow the celebration kicks into high gear with the 148th Fourth of July Parade at 9 am. With that early start, you probably won't have enough time to sleep off those burgers, but stay strong and head back to the Riverwalk Parks for free music all day along with the Budweiser Coed Sand Volleyball Tournament.
Of course at 10 pm on Independence Day there's a huge fireworks show to celebrate the holiday. The party still rolls through the weekend with the Indee Firecracker Open Golf Tournament on Saturday and an outdoor movie on Sunday. If you're really enjoying your time in this town, just remember that the Brew-B-Q starts on September 20.
