Virgin America Planning Main Cabin Select Service

July 29, 2008 at 1:09 PM | by pbb | 4 Comments

An announcement yesterday from Virgin America got a little bit buried by all the space tourism news. But it's a big deal that the airline's calling Main Cabin Select service.

The amped-up economy tickets will basically get you first class perks at your main cabin seat. Among the pluses: Free food, drinks and cocktails; free in-flight entertainment, including movies; 38-inches of seat pitch; reserved overhead bin storage and priority check-in, security screening and boarding.

MCS will go on sale September 15 for flights from mid-October and later, and the service will cost $50-$100 more than a standard economy ticket. While that means it isn't for the ultra-price sensitive, we like the idea. As others have noted, ancillary charges aren't nearly as onerous when they go toward a new service rather than something passengers have traditionally gotten for free.

this is a good idea but...

I wonder if they were beta testing this yesterday.  I was in row 9 on a VA flight from LAX to JFK when some latecomer grabbed the middle seat.  He sat down and tried to recline his seat, to no avail, and the girl next to him said "they don't recline, exit row" and the dude LOST IT.  I mean really lost it.  He threw something at the seat back that bounced into row 8 then said "my apologies" to the girl and went back to his original seat.

Anyway, so buyer beware -- row 9 gets you extra leg room, but not a reclining seat -- still a really good deal with all the other perks IMHO.

Oh, and way more important, you may have to witness a row 9 passenger tantrum.  Luckily the tantrum was done in less than 30 seconds.

Exit Rows on Virgin America Airbuses

Just to clarify that Virgin America flies Airbus A319 and A320 aircraft.  On the A319's (used mostly between the shorter haul west coast cities ie; San Diego - San Francisco) the emergency exit row is row 8.  These seats DO recline and are considered "premium seats".  Row 7 does not recline on the A319 because federal law prohibits any seats from reclining into an exit row, no matter what type of aircraft or what airline is flying it.

On the A320, rows 9 and 10 are emergency exit rows, however only row 10 reclines as it is federal law that the row in front of an emergency exit row cannot recline into an emergency exit row.  On the A320 rows 8 and 9 do not recline as they would both be reclining into an emergency exit row.  Therefore, row 9 on an A320 has the additional legroom of an emergency exit row but does not recline and is NOT considered a premium seat by Virgin America.  Passengers sitting in row 9 do NOT pay extra to sit in that row.  Row 10 has the additional legroom and DOES recline (into row 11) and therefore is considered a "premium seat" by Virgin America.  There is always going to be someone that is someone unhappy about their seat not reclining.  This is not a choice given to any airline but rather is federal law.  The worst rows are row 7 on the A319 because it doesn't recline nor does it have additional legroom and row 8 on the A320 for the same reason.  I hope this helps explain the mystery of the non-reclining seats in the main cabin of Virgin America's Airbuses.

    Weird...

The flight attendant on our flight was telling people they could not sit in an open seat in row 9 because it was a premium row.  Anyway, this made me happy, cause I got extra leg room and no middle seat mate.  So, good to know you can get this row with no extra cost.
