First-Person Airport Review: So Is T5 Really That Bad?

July 22, 2008 at 3:00 PM | by pbb | 0 Comments

The opening of T5 at London Heathrow was so outrageously botched, sometimes "shambolic" didn't seem good enough to describe it. But in the months since, have things changed? And, more importantly, can you fly there and hope to see your checked bags ever again?

NewYorkology blogger Amy Langfield transited the terminal three times during a recent European trip, and described one experience in T5 as "flawless." Really?!

Not that there weren't some hiccups. On one trip, her luggage did indeed get mishandled, resulting in an hour-plus-long wait. Amy also didn't care for the lengthy bus ride from terminal to plane--or the grand prix-worthy steering of her driver.

Back in the terminal, she did like Gordon Ramsay's restaurant:

Which has an open design (including some retro-feeling '60s wing-shaped benches), perfectly fine food well-plated, nice wine and, coming in late August, "plane picnics" which you'll be able to grab at the take-out counter and bring on your flight.

But the best part of the experience seemed to be the British Airways "Terraces" lounge, with free booze, free food, great views and:

Bathrooms [that] pretty much look like they're made for a pre-travel tryst, as each self-contained room affords maximum privacy [and has] its own sink.

Yeah, baby.
