Table Crashing: Bertha's

July 21, 2008 at 3:21 PM | 0 Comments

Even though Bertha's has become a tourist magnet in the heart of Baltimore's yuppified Fells Point neighborhood, it's still got enough junk hanging from the rafters and no-nonsense waitresses to call it, at best, a down-home spot. And we mean that as the highest compliment.

When we ducked in recently, a tableful of rowdies in one of the two dining rooms were killing beers and piles of mussels, the house specialty. Figuring they knew what was up, we ordered the same. A couple minutes later, our bucket of bivalves arrived, along with a ramekin of garlic butter and capers. Along side, we had a pint of the house Bertha's Best Bitter.

Right as our dinner arrived, a thunderstorm rolled in. Looking out the small windows into the street, the wood-paneled dining room felt even more nautical--and the pounding rain might've made our eats even more enjoyable, cozy as we were indoors.

Since there was no way in hell we were heading out into that mess, we sized up the dessert menu. When our enormous slice of pecan butter tart came out, jaws almost hit the table. Our waitress' reaction? "It better be big for $6.50!" We were still grinning when our check came with our signature "Eat Bertha's Mussels" bumper sticker.
