Gibberish-Talking Naked Man Subdued On American Airlines Flight By Soccer Team

This story is in equal measures sad, scary, telling, and hilarious. A seemingly mentally disturbed passenger on an American Airlines flight from Boston to Los Angeles Friday emerged from the lavatory buck-ass naked. He was immediately admonished to re-pants himself by the general manager of the New England Revolution MLS soccer team, who was traveling with his team to Los Angeles for a SuperLiga match against Chivas USA. The man, who passengers said had been muttering gibberish to himself, re-entered the lavatory and put his clothes back on, only to bolt for the emergency exit door upon coming out the second time. Several members of the Revolution sprung to action, restraining the man and assisting the crew while the flight diverted to Oklahoma City, where the offender was taken into custody by authorities for a mental health evaluation. So the story ends well, more or less. Just a couple of observations:

Maybe, in taking off his clothes, the man was just trying to show the flight crew and any air marshals who happened to be riding along that he was completely unarmed. You might think the TSA would appreciate such gestures. Or perhaps the whole thing was a setup designed to draw attention to Major League Soccer in a nation whose response to it has been lackluster at best. You've got to admit, that's more action than you often see on the field. Then again, the naked man may have been a disoriented German nudist who thought he was flying on Europe's first official nude flight from Erfurt to the resort of Usedom. In any case, it's been a pretty rich year for in-flight theatrics, so I say let's return to the stultifying boredom of air travel at its best.
