Free Book... If You Can Find It

Next time you're in San Francisco or London, keep your eyes peeled for a small group of books stacked neatly near a park bench, news stand or on your bike seat. You can't miss them, as they have a bright yellow cover with huge block letters that read FREE BOOK.

Don't fret, it's not some Krishna BS that you'll pick up, suddenly confronted by a little man dressed in orange robes holding a bell and flowers. The book is titled Potential Energy, and it's a self-published novel by a writer named Schist.

After becoming seriously frustrated by publishers, Schist had 1,000 copies printed and he's hoping to create an alluvial response via viral and community marketing. Of course there's a website where you can leave your input and interact with the author.

The plot surrounds Jon Chamberlayne, a 30-year-old product designer in London, struggling to reconcile his role in the creation of useless objects with his wish for a more environmentally sound existence. Coupled with the boredom he senses in a life characterized by anonymity and underachievement, he feels pushed to the limits of his mind, experiencing moments of vertiginous anxiety.

Not a particularly jovial read for the summer season, true, but once we have our hands on a copy, we can offer a more formal review. If you find a copy before us, do tell us where and what you think!
