Bear Bites Camper at Yellowstone

July 18, 2008 at 11:15 AM | by egw | 3 Comments

Stephen Colbert was right! Two campgrounds near Yellowstone National Park have been closed at the height of tourist season after a bear attacked a camper Thursday morning.

The bear, believed to be a grizzly, entered a tent at the Soda Butte campground at the park's northeastern end and bit and scratched a man. It is not known whether he was camping alone or how old he was, but it appeared his food was stored correctly (a common draw to hungry animals in and near the park).

The National Park Service said the bear returned to the scene of the crime later on Thursday, proving that bears are not actually that smart.

    Huh?

His food was or wasn't stored correctly?  This is a fairly critical point.

When I camp in bear country, I like to take an alternative approach that I call the "salmon circle".  It's a great way to get close to the animals, for those of you who aren't terribly risk-averse, without attracting them in your tent (per se).

    The news coverage I read

said that it appeared his food was stored correctly. Of course, if there was a Butterfinger wrapper in the tent, that wouldn't have been immediately apparent.

    I should read more closely

If his food was stored correctly that becomes really disconcerting.  I'll stop joking about maimings.
