My Lonely Planet guide to Southern Africa doesn't say much about Twyfelfontein--but that may be because there isn't much to say. Dubbed "the most extensive galleries of rock art in Africa," this off-the-beaten-path tourist trap begs the question, just how many of there galleries are really out there anyway? It's big, sure. But it's also boring.
Located about forty minutes west of Khorixas, Twyfelfontein--a name that means "doubtful spring"--serves as a showcase to 6,000-year-old sand petroglyphs. These sandstone etchings are impossible to find anywhere else. And while the ancient images of the Big Five animals and sacred hunters may pique the interest of artists, and the rock formations' creation may tempt geologists, there's not much reason to stop here when Namibia has so much to see. The dirt road is long, out of the way and otherwise headed to nowhere.
For those who avoid advice and opt to experience one of the country's traditional art wonders, the winding trails that weave through the outdoor "gallery" are easy to navigate. There's not much point in shelling out the dosh for offered guides. (Though doing so will only set you back a couple of bucks.)
And while there are several places to stay nearby, like the popular Country Lodge, it's best to make Twyfelfontein a day trip and instead overnight at one of the two lodges in Khorixas. This will make the trip to Vingerklip, a 115-foot-high finger of rock just east of town, even easier to get to in the morning.
