Foodie Travel: Buenos Aires' Hot New Grandma-Run Joint

July 17, 2008 at 1:05 PM | 0 Comments

The hot Friday-night table in Argentina's capital isn't an Adria-influenced foamfest or a gourmet burger palace. Instead, those with discerning taste buds are lining up at the city's Armenian cultural center for its weekly fundraising supper--and it's not for Jell-o salads and casserole.

Argentina has the highest concentration of Armenians in South America, and an estimated 70,000 live in Buenos Aires alone. The Friday dinners support the General Armenian Union of Charity (UGAB) which funds an Armenian high school and other cultural events. Local teens work as servers and man the reservation line (4771-6500), which you'll need to call if you want a shot at some delicious dolmas and lamb kebabs.

Food writer Cameron Peake describes the atmosphere:

I was immediately seated at a rickety table with a modest, slightly-stained tablecloth and handed a thick menu. The food reflected the frenzied feeling of the establishment... The servers presented the plates with an innocent gusto that was both endearing and slightly suspicious.

He went on to call the hummus "The best I've had in South America."
