Celebrate Beautiful Living at Bele Chere

July 10, 2008 at 11:00 AM | by | ()

For the last 30 years, downtown Asheville, North Carolina has come alive with its street festival, Bele Chere. This year, the celebration of beautiful living takes place July 25-27. Downtown is transformed into a huge entertainment venue, with revelers roaming about--without having to worry about traffic.

One of the more interesting events at this year's festival is the Bele Chere Urban Challenge. Twelve contestants will camp on "Urban Island" in the middle of the celebration and will compete in activities to challenge the mind, body and spirit. It's a little bit like Survivor, Amazing Race and Big Brother all rolled into one--or at least that's what the official site is claiming! You'll have to submit an application, but you have until July 20. For those that want even more reality show-style action, there's also a scavenger hunt during each day of the festival.

Animal lovers will also find themselves entertained at this year's Bele Chere. The Purina Ultimate Air Dogs event brings together different breeds of dogs to compete against each other in rounds of long-distance diving. Maybe you'll even witness a world record--watch for a 26-foot jump.

Of course there will be food, games, rides and, thankfully, booze. There's plenty of music each day with the highlights including The Wailers, Edwin McCain and Travis Tritt. Best of all, admission to the entire weekend's festivities is free.

Lurking giant stuffed animal?

No thanks!

No Travis Tritt Call-out?

Ellen, I would've guessed that would catch your eye more than an reclusive stuffed puppy.

Festival Mascot?

I really liked the picture, and hoped everyone would look past that doggie.  However, he is truly frightening.
