If you've never celebrated a quadricentennial before, get thee to Quebec City this weekend, because QC is turning 400.

Quebec has actually been celebrating all year long, but the big blowout is this Thursday through Sunday. To be honest, give the line-up of events, a three-day event may not have been necessary, let alone a whole year. There's the opening night party, featuring a show from Van Halen, ending with fireworks over the St. Lawrence River. After that, the offerings get a little less blockbuster, so you'll surely have a few hours to kill.

Where to Stay
You don't have to freeze your buns off at the Ice Hotel. HotelChatter has the lowdown on Hotel Dominion 1912. This modern hotel, set in QC's central Old Port district, is one of the best deals around.

Where to Eat
No visit to Quebec is complete without a serving of poutine--french fries smothered in cheese curds and gravy. Guidebooks may try to point you to fancy restaurants, but locals swear by the stuff served up at fast food joint Chez Ashton, QC's answer to McDonald's

Where to Listen
OK, so maybe Van Halen won't offer the most authentic Canadian experience. For a more local music scene, check out Kiosque Edwin-Bélanger, the performance stage at Battlefields Park. KEB offers free local music every Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
