New on the Scene: Park Slope's Lookout Hill Smokehouse

June 6, 2008 at 10:35 AM | 2 Comments

Brooklyn has a lot of great barbecue options, and sadly, Lookout Hill Smokehouse is not one of them. Lookout Hill opened about two weeks ago, in a location that's been bad luck for a string of restaurants including another barbecue spot, previous tenant Biscuit BBQ.

Lookout Hill seemingly got off to a great start, with an ambitious all-wood design and a new smoker brought in from Tennessee. But we can't see how they expect to succeed where Biscuit failed: The food simply isn't up to snuff.

The menu at Lookout Hill is heavy on smoked meats. There are all the BBQ standbys: brisket, pulled pork, rotisserie chicken and ribs along with lamb and a rotating lineup of specials. The meat is well cooked, but the marinade was way too sweet for our taste. Their much-vaunted smoker somehow manages to prepare food that isn't remotely smoky.

The trouble with seasoning also extends to the appeteizer menu. The bourbon infused pureed yams were drowned in the liquor. While the food failed to hit the mark, the staff were friendly and the place looks great. If they manage to to chill out with the flavorings and go for a more pared down approach, Lookout Hill could turn things around. We're rooting for them--'cause who doesn't love good barbecue in the summer?

    Equipment issues

The reason no NYC bbq joint will never live up to any real bbq found in the country is the city's kitchen equipment laws.  BBQ places in the city cannot have the right kind of true smokers and open flame to make the real shizz.  Fact of life.

That place in Chelsea on 23rd is pretty good, but you go down to Memphis then go back, and it all tastes like a reheated Hungry Man.  I used to live in Park Slope and Bisquit was ok, now they can open another bistro with stroller access!
