Iceland Travel: Fun in the Summer Sun

June 30, 2008 at 10:00 AM | 0 Comments

If the summer heat has already gotten you down, then why don't you consider a trip to Iceland? Even in the capital of Reykjavik you'll be treated to coolness--expect temperatures in the 50s--as you experience a great deal of urban cleanliness--not to mention the country's green initiatives.

August is probably the ideal month to travel to Iceland as the abundance of daylight and comfortable weather provide ample opportunity to hit up all the country has to offer. You'll first want to get a Reykjavik Tourist Card, as it's your discount ticket to all the city has to offer, including admission to thermal pools, public transportation, the National Museum and the Family Park and Zoo. Unfortunately, the ticket does not appear to grant access to the Icelandic Phallological Museum.

The end of summer brings both the Gay Pride Parade and Reykjavik Cultural Night. The parade takes place August 7-10 and brings thousands into the city to celebrate and support the gay community. Cultural Night takes place on the evening of August 23, as almost a third of the country's population takes to the streets to enjoy the sights and offerings of the city.

Alternatively, to get a little more in touch with nature, there's nothing better than looking for some puffins. During the summer months there are between 4 and 6 million of these birds breeding in the hills of Heimaey. If you're having too much fun and don't want to leave the comfort of your WiFi-friendly hotel room, just navigate to the Puffin Cam to see the critters in action.
