Surviving AC: This City Loves Asian Card Games

Who goes to Atlantic City? We sent Neal Ungerleider to find out.

Judging by the casino floors of Atlantic City, the town's current gambling trend is Chinese-style card games. Not only that, but nearly half of Atlantic City's casinos have opted to locate Chinese card games in special Asian theme areas. "Disney China" architecture and design with passable noodle shops? Find it here.

Here are some of the section names where Chinese card games are located in Atlantic City's casinos:

• Caesars: "Palace East"
• Hilton Atlantic City: "Treasure Palace"
• Showboat: "The Asian Pit" (hey, at least the name is descriptive!)
• Tropicana: "The Jade Palace"

Borgata, Bally's, Harrah's, Resorts, Trump Marina, Trump Plaza and the Trump Taj Mahal all scatter Asian table games throughout their casino floors. Pai gow can be found at all of Atlantic City's casinos and most offer sic bo as well. Given the voracious appetite many Chinese expats have for casino weekends--case in point: Foxwoods' success with the niche market--Macao- and Hong Kong-style games have picked up quickly here.

From what we've seen, American variant pai gow poker fills the most tables, followed by original pai gow and sic bo.
