Surviving AC: The Weird, Wild World of Branded Slot Machines

Who goes to Atlantic City? We sent Neal Ungerleider to find out.

Let's cut to the chase when it comes to slot machines: The babies are essentially random number generators. Ever since the great switchover to computerized slot machines, the games have been based on internal software that uses an RNG to determine what will show up on the reels.

Nonetheless, slots are popular. They dominate the floor space of nearly all Atlantic City casinos. In the quest to attact gamblers to machines, manufacturers have increasingly turned to offering licensed slots based on popular television, film, music and cultural properties.

In Atlantic City, the current kings of the roost are the Monopoly Big Event and Wheel of Fortune multiplayers. Both are based around a newish trend known as "community gaming." As per the press release:

This new game concept offers the first slot machine experience where all players participate in and win the bonus round together. Monopoly Big Event will be introduced with three new dedicated video game themes under the Monopoly brand

Monopoly Big Event players are encouraged to root for each other much in the manner of some table games, as a Big Event bonus is awarded to all eligible gaming devices in the bank of machines. During the communal bonus round, the overhead plasma screen displays Mr. Monopoly and his dog as they move around the Monopoly board based on a roll of the dice.

Those are the multiplayer machines. As far as branded singleplayers, a casual walk around Atlantic City's casinos found the following games:

• Jeopardy!
• The Price is Right
• Deal or No Deal
• Top Gun
• Kenny Rogers
• The Village People
• Slingo
• Star Wars
• Alien

So it turns out '70s pop icons and science fiction movies make the best slots. Who knew?
