Celebrating the Phourth of July

June 26, 2008 at 10:15 AM | by kjb | 1 Comment

When it comes to the Fourth of July, Philadelphia doesn't mess around. Things get started this Friday and continue through July 6 thanks to the celebration known as the Sunoco Welcome America Festival. This weekend there are family events during the day and free outdoor movies each night at different locations around the city, including a screening of "Rocky" on Saturday night.

As the holiday weekend draws closer, the party kicks into high gear. On the evening of July 3 the Benjamin Franklin Parkway welcomes Latin performers including DLG and N'Klabe, and there will also be opportunities to interact with many Latino baseball stars at the Fiesta de Jonron Tour.

After the fiesta, hurry over to Independence Hall where two well-known reenactors (they play Benjamin Franklin and Betsy Ross) are actually getting married. Dressed in full colonial garb, the Philly POPS will provide the ambiance for their ceremony. If you feel like crashing the reception, it's at City Tavern.

On the big day, the Southwest Airlines July 4th Parade heads down the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, with marching bands, floats and loads of patriotism. Of course, the day ends with a huge fireworks celebration, along with a concert by John Legend.

The next day, try to loose your patriotic hangover by going to the Taste of Philadelphia. Held at the Great Plaza at Penn's Landing, visitors can nosh on samples from the best restaurants around the city. Again, the evening ends with another fireworks spectacular designed by Zambelli. If you're up for even more action on Sunday, there are no fireworks, but the Taste of Philadelphia will still be going strong.
