The waterfalls are on! After months of waiting, one of New York's most ambitious public art projects since "The Gates" is officially open.
The great thing about public art is that it isn't locked up inside a stuffy museum. But since the falls are scattered around the city, we put together a little guide to help you track 'em down.
Locations:
We've marked the four installations on our NYC Waterfalls Map. They're located under the Brooklyn Bridge, between Piers 4 and 5 in Brooklyn, on Pier 35 in Manhattan and on Governors Island. To see all four at once, head to the South Street Seaport or Manhattan's Pier 11. From the other side of the East River, you can see all four waterfalls from the pop up park under the Brooklyn Bridge.
Tours:
Circle Line Downtown operates the only official boat tours of the falls, with 30-minute cruises dedicated to the installations narrated by Eliasson. A limited number of free tickets are still available for dates after July 16, and you'll have to call or email to request 'em. If you'd rather not deal with the hassle, the cruise is a respectable $10.
Hours:
The falls are on from 7 am until 10 pm, except on Tuesday and Thursday, when they're switched on at 9 am. After sunset, they're illuminated. The exhibit runs through October 13.
More Eliasson: You'll have to move fast, but the Museum of Modern Art and its affiliate PS1 are hosting an installation-heavy Eliasson show across their two venues. It closes June 30, but we can tell you from experience that it's awesome!
