The best part about food in Bangkok is that the most delicious meal you can buy costs less than $1--and is available on almost any street corner. Just knowing the phrases "pad thai" and "pad kei mow" took us far, though more ambitious eaters have plenty of opportunities to branch out.
It seems like every form of life is marinated, skewered and grilled, from birds of all kids to marine life with tentacles to ambiguous brown meats. They're all tasty. Making quick friends with our favorite local vendor took us to heaven daily.
It's hard to say where to find the best street food because it's just so common everywhere in the city. If pressed, we ate the best Thai, surprisingly, in Chinatown. Reliable stands are also found in areas with heavy foot traffic like Sukhumvit and the daily street fairs.
If there's one rule to selecting Bangkok street food, it's to be selective but open-minded. Most cooks operate fast and with purpose--like any proper chef--but even if the street vendor looks a little too young, or a little too desperate, her food is probably worth trying.
You might stumble on a meal that's a little too bitter and you'll definitely eat at least one bite that's way too spicy, but as with anything in Bangkok, it's better to embrace the excess.
