Tucked beside a Baptist church in Bangkok's Sukhumvit neighborhood--a commercial district lined with malls by day and sex-pats by night--The Atlanta maintains a strict "no prostitutes, no catamites" policy. The hotel toggles between the inanimate equivalent of a comforting grandmother and the abrasive high school prude who talks in detail about all the acts she doesn't commit: The hotel offers refuge from the city's sex trade by hanging signs about the types of periphery folks not allowed inside.
In addition to the quiet surroundings, the hotel offers cheap, air-conditioned rooms (about $35 per night), though it seems a bit like the hotel spent all its money tiling and decorating the lobby and neglected the barren, outdated rooms. Tucked behind lush greenery, The Atlanta has what it says is the oldest hotel pool in all of Bangkok.
After a dip, eat dinner at the adjacent cafe. We hear from journalists living nearby that the Massaman curry there is some of the best in the city.
