First-Person Bus Reviews: Megabus

June 23, 2008 at 1:31 PM | by pbb | 7 Comments

Megabus is riding high with new double-decker coaches and lots of new passengers thanks to $4-a-gallon gas. But is service on the super cheap bus up to snuff? Sort of!

One recent Megabus rider wasn't looking forward to her trip. Said an Ohio University student:

No one wants to take the bus, but driving and flying are so expensive.

Why wouldn't anyone want to roll Megabus style? Probably because of what another rider experienced:

The scene on 31st Street was TOTAL CHAOS. People lined up on the sidewalk for different destinations. We left about half an hour late, but smooth sailing the rest of the way, and I sat up front with no one next to me. The bus driver had NEVER driven to Boston before, so I had to help him out.

Still... It's only a dollar! Doesn't matter to people in LA: The car-lovers out west never got on board.

Not as good as it seems....

I had a terrible experience yesterday, as did about 300 other passengers, when every bus departing Chicago was between 1 and 3 hours late. When we called the Megabus number we were treated very rudely and couldn't get a straight answer as to why the buses were late, or when they would be arriving.

After about an hour, we were told that the bus to Michigan had been canceled, that there was no further information, and that it wasn't the job of customer service to deal with us.  Amtrak got a lot of extra passengers that day, which is unfortunate, because the bus finally did arrive.  It was 2.5 hours late (we got ahold of someone at dispatch that said one would come eventually, they just couldn't tell us when).  When we finally got on the bus, it had a malfunction which resulted in an ear piercing beeping the entire 4.5 hour ride.  Even the bus driver, who was very friendly, was annoyed, and apologized but couldn't fix it.

Megabus owes vouchers to every person that had to deal with their terrible service yesterday, although I for one probably won't ever be using their services again.

    yea

The story above has me concerned for Megabus. I used to take it frequently from its Chicago hub as well, but only because no airlines served the backwater towns on my itinerary. (darn you, Toledo!)

    Horrible/Terrifying/Worst experience

I had booked Tickets to travel on 3rd July Midnight, from St.Louis to Chicago, which was supposed to leave at 1.15 am, i was with my Wife and a 23 month old baby girl, we waited near the Union Station and waited and waited............no intimation from the Megabus office or customer service we called up and found out that the Bus would come at 5am in the morning, and we waited the whole night in the cold and were too tired and exhausted, we could not believe we were in the US and this is the level of customer service offered, the bus never came till 8.am in the morning, we came back home in the morning, without sleep the whole night, we called up the Customer service at around 9.30 These guys were so rude and still our ticket money is not refunded, and would take 30-40 days is what they said, IS THERE A WAY I CAN LODGE A FORMAL COMPLAINT WITH SOMEWHERE FOR THIS HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE AND SUE THEM, i request the members to rethink on this Company seriously,

  1. I've been screwed, hope you don't

    BE AWARE:

If you buy tickets for 2 passengers:

EVEN THOUGH you get two confirmation numbers...  81/82####, they CANNOT change one reservation without the other.  So, if you buy two tickets and one of you can't make it last minute... you are SCREWED.  You can change both or just suck it up and pay double.

    Bus

It's easy to hate on Megabus. But the fact is that you can't beat the price. And it's a huge step up from the Chinatown bus lines.

    Stay away from Megabus. Beware!!

They do not pick you from the bus stop, they do not give you any information/updates, they do not listen your complaints/issues, their customer care personnel are expert in disconnecting your calls or transferring your calls here and there and they do not reply to your emails too. I had booked three mega bus tickets through www.Megabus.com with confidence to get one of the best bus services in the US as I was traveling with my spouse and kid. The bus never showed up at airport on the date and time (mid night). We were there at airport for 2 hrs. After trying for 15-20 minutes at mid night to contact Mega bus customer service, I came to know that a white bus had come there and left. That bus was not from the Mega bus fleet and did not have any indication of Mega bus. Driver did not ask any passengers waiting at airport to board the bus or let them know that that was the Mega bus. Also, the bus stopped at Buffalo airport for just 2 minutes and drove away ignoring all the passengers waiting at airport for Mega bus. The bus driver was busy talking to someone over the phone throughout and left soon after. No one from Mega bus was there at the airport or at customer service to help us or tell us what to do next. Because of this negligence and carelessness, I suffered a lot of mental and physical problems as it was raining on that night and I was traveling with a kid. I finally decided to stay at hotel and book three airline. I spent around $450 for all of these things. Again the next day I tried to contact Mega bus customer service and they kept transferring the call to different people. Since then I have tried to contact Mega Bus Customer service 5-6 times but have not received a proper reply yet. I have also sent 3-4 emails to inquiries@megabus.com , support@megabus.com and through Mega bus website but again have not received any reply. I have left 2-3 voice messages for Mega Bus Customer Care Supervisor as well, but he/she has not returned my calls yet. Above examples show that Mega bus is not interested in solving customer's problems which are in fact your creation.

    Megabus :( :( :(

Not a good option at all as eventually you have to put more money and time. If you purchase their tickets in cheap, they do not pick you up. Their customer department is worst in the world. Looks they just listen but not resolve your issue. Again do not use Megabus if you want to save money and peace of mind.
