The Virgin Clubhouse at SFO: Futuristic, with a Bong

Before our recent Superfly flight, we had the opportunity to spend some time in the Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse at SFO. We were greeted by a woman who looked like a missing character from an "Austin Powers" movie. She was older, just a hair over five feet tall with big red hair, even bigger glasses and a vague English accent. She said things like "Welcome love, great to have you here!" Good start...

Inside, the decor is a mix of comfy mod furniture with bright futuristic accents. There is a "business center" with a couple computers, but with free WiFi, why not use your own? Instead of working, though, we flaked out on one of the long purple chaises and blissed out with a free cocktail. Speaking of the bar, one decor choice that caught our eye was the two-foot-tall red glass bong that rested between two bottles of whiskey.

We asked the bartender about it, and he told us the bong was merely a conversation starter--or depending on how hard you hit it, a conversation ender. Though there was an X-Box available, linked to a huge flat screen TV, we didn't see Richard Branson playing it.

In the back of the clubhouse is a formal-yet-stylish seating area with a great view of planes taking off over the bay and nearby mountains. (This is also where you can order some eats from the lounge kitchen.)

For $40 a day, we think the super-cool lounge is totally worth it. From free cockatils, snacks and WiFi to the available showers, comfortable furniture to stretch out on and the overall cool vibe, it was way better than hanging with the hoi polloi in the terminal.
