Boating in Capri: Rules Optional

Where: Capri, Italy

There is no better way to visit Capri than by boat. So when Jaunted was handed a boat rental brochure that read, "Capri Boat: You Drive It. Lowest Prices and No Stress," we thought it was too good to be true.

Surely we couldn't drive our own boat without signing our life away, providing five forms of ID, taking a two-hour boating course and having our fingerprints taken, right? But after only 10 minutes of instruction (in Italian) and $25 each, we were sailing into the turquoise sea.

A "no stress" voyage it wasn't. The initial departure is from Capri's main port where ferry boats and yachts are in constant motion, and the currents are super strong. Then comes the jagged coastline that Capri is famous for. Yes, it's insanely beautiful, but when you're trying to steer a boat, rocks are the enemy.

Our instructor told us a group swim would be just as easy as dropping anchor. Just make sure your boat doesn't drift like ours did--or be prepared to make several apologies to the nearby boaters who you bump.
