Says the Associated Press:
Montauk remains an epicenter for shark fishing tournaments, a half-century after legendary shark hunter Frank Mundus practically invented the sport and became the inspiration for the Captain Quint character in the movie "Jaws."
Despite protests from animal advocacy groups that decry the events as inhumane, the tournaments are thriving. For the first time, this [past] weekend's Star Island Yacht Club tournament boasts $1 million in prizes.
The Humane Society turned out to the Montauk tournament this weekend to protest "glorifying the killing of sharks," but the event organizers defended themselves, noting that the majority of the sharks caught are released, and that much of the shark meat is donated to local food pantry programs.
If you're past the ethical issue, Star Island also has a mako and thresher shark tournament coming up in August. Make sure you pack your turtleneck!
