"Summer Streets" Turning NYC into a Summer Destination

June 16, 2008 at 3:30 PM | by pbb | 1 Comment

Normally New York is a place to flee in the summer, as your shoes melt into the sidewalks and all your buddies are chilling at beach houses in Long Island. But Mayor Bloomberg has just announced a new program called Summer Streets that'll open up nearly seven miles of pavement to pedestrians and bikers.

Scheduled for August 9, 16 and 23 from 7 am-1 pm, the city will close a lengthy stretch of Park Avenue to traffic and invite fitness clubs, yoga and dance centers and bike lovers to take over the streets. If you've really got your walking shoes on, you'll be able to hike from the Sheep Meadow in Central Park all the way to DUMBO--via the Brooklyn Bridge--without seeing a car.

Throw in the NYC Waterfalls and all of a sudden Manhattan's a destination this summer. Just make sure you have a place to cool off in mind.
