US Airways Will Also Start Charging for Checked Bags

June 12, 2008 at 5:18 PM | 1 Comment

The same day United said it would charge for checked bags, US Airways has officially announced it will do the same. As on American and United, the new fee doesn't apply to every passenger, but the details are complex enough that it's easier to just assume a checked bag will cost you.

Of course, the airline doesn't see anything wrong with the new set up:

We're transforming our business by initiating a "pay-for-what-you-use" model for items like baggage and beverages. Combined with new Dividend Miles policies, a headcount reduction and a reduction of flights, we expect these changes to help us return to sustained profitability.

US Air will also start charging for drinks ($2) and charging more for booze ($7). At least the carrier hasn't yet asked that passengers not bring food on board unless they brought enough for everyone.

  1. Unreal

Allow me to be one of the first to say that I told you so. If this is not beginning to look like the "SKYBUS" model, that all the so called experts said would not work, then why are the rest of the so called " Legacy" airlines, switching over to it. When you bought a ticket on Sjybus, you knew what your charges were going to be upfront. Not like this, where charges are being hidden.
