Once on Moorea, rent a scooter from a local (about $60 a day), explore the island and stop off at Club Bali Hai on Cook's Bay. Every night except Wednesday, Bali Hai hosts a great BYOB Happy Hour, a nice reprieve from the $15 mai tais at the mega-resorts.
Californian "Muk" McCallum, who moved to Tahiti in the 1960s with two friends to buy and run a vanilla farm, hosts the evening and is a superb storyteller. If you've got questions about how to get somewhere, how much souvenirs should cost or what Tahitian women think is irresistable, Muk's your man. He's extremely entertaining, hilarious and has great local anecdotes.
Bali Hai's also got fun crab races on Monday nights. These aren't hermit crabs either: The just-plucked-from-the-rocks land crabs are pissed off and read to run through a small wooden gaunlet after bets are placed by liquored up locals and guests alike.
Happy hour winds down around 7:30 pm, so you can still make it to a local spot for dinner on your scooter. Be sure to bring both some drinks and some stories to share!
