Would You Ever Use an Airplane Seat Cover?

May 27, 2008 at 4:45 PM | 8 Comments

We've been known to bring along our own pillows and blankets when taking a flight, but for some reason we can't imagine ourselves using a NiceFlights airplane seat cover.

But maybe we should get over how uncool it would look to carry and unwrap one of these things. After all, the seat cover does sound promising when fighting nasty airplane germs. And according to NiceFlights, "airplane seats are generally cleaned after an average of 78,000 visitors!"

Of course, that's the number given out by NiceFlights which obviously wants to create demand for these things. But with airlines cutting back as much as they are, we bet seat-cleaning is definitely among the stuff getting scaled back.

The cover is $30, machine-washable and it comes in an array of colors. (Naturally, we like the pink.) Each cover is 97 percent cotton and 3 percent spandex in case you have a time tough fitting it over the standard airplane seats. It also comes inside a mini-pouch which you can use in-flight to store your glasses, iPod and other stuff.

Snazzier alternatives like the camouflage print shown above can be found at PlaneSheets. The price is the same and the prints are more exciting, but these are 100 percent polyester. Bonus: At PlaneSheets you can have your sheet monogrammed. Now we know what we are getting our WASPy, jetsetting relatives for Christmas this year!

    Camo-commando

The camo seat cover is a great way to announce to the plane you are sitting there on your JFK-LAX in full-on commando mode.

    Not sure...

About the covers that is.  I use a jacket or other throw for the chair.  The cover may be a bit much.

I did a post on the top 7 airline in-flight tips, that takes a different approach to comfort aloft:  http://beatofhawaii.com/our-top-7-in-flight-airline-tips/

    Not for most but...

It would be great for people with peanut allergies. I've seen lots of folks who have to scrub down their seat with wipes before they can even sit down. This might be less time consuming.

    whoa

Not cute. Maybe alright for those with allegies and if you have toddlers who like to take all kinds of positions in those airline seats, but otherwise it smacks of anal-retentive.

    Those seats are gross, but...

Staying fully clothed is just easier. Hear that, Southwest girl?

    Is someone OD?

You have got to have a little bit of obsessive compulsive disorder to justify to yourself actually

    1. Spending the money for this and
    2. Lugging it around with you on your trip...

I mean...whatever, just sit on it and forget about it. I'm sure you'll come in contact with much worse things than a plane seat after you reach your destination.

    Butt pad

Haha, I don't think I would use one of those, but the airlines seats are pretty nasty. Think about it, someone is sitting in one of those seats almost all the time! for the life of the aircraft (20 or more years). Don't think that the airlines are going to change those seats and put new ones in!

I actually fly with a thermarest inflatable butt pad (they're for camping). Looks completely silly, but makes the flight much more comfortable.
