Asian Spa Fish Feast on Human Flesh

May 27, 2008 at 12:20 PM | 1 Comment

Fishy foot baths are all the rage in spas throughout the Far East. The bizarre trend started in Turkey where people pay to be immersed in a pool teeming with "doctor fish" that eat away at dead skin.

The treatment, which is also known as "fish reflexology," apparently results in super-smooth feet. Recently, doctor fish spas have popped up in Japan, Malaysia, Korea, Singapore and Croatia. After the jump, check out video footage of these flesh-eating fish in action.

Several bloggers have reported on this phenomenon, and the consensus seems to be that having fish feast on your skin feels like receiving many small electric shocks. Former "America's Next Top Model" contestant Elyse Sewell took a doctor fish bath in Seoul and said of the fifteen minute treatment:

If you're even a third as ticklish as I am, you will spend this time in the most profound psychological distress.

Not exactly a ringing endorsement, but another brave soul who similarly described being tortured by doctor fish in Korea said that afterwards she was "shocked at how smooth my feet were." Asian doctor fish spas: totally into suffering for beauty!
