Refereeing the Travel Media: Gridskipper Not Keeping Too Many Fans

May 23, 2008 at 2:00 PM | by | Comments (5)

The new Gridskipper launched yesterday, after a few weeks of tinkering, a change of ownership and a change of spring into summer. The verdict? Not too many fans out there.

We actually just got done Windexing our glass house--long weekend coming up, you know--so we don't plan to throw any stones just yet. But, damn, just about everybody else has.

The editors of Gridskipper posted the site's new editorial raison d'être on Thursday:

Formerly focused on the urban travel experiences, the new Gridskipper knows travel as an exercise in escape and leisure. We spend our weekdays toiling away ... so you'll excuse us, please, if we don't mind a weekend at the beach with two too many glasses of rosé.

Thing is, a majority of comments did anything but excuse them. Said one reader:

Wow. That sounds horrible. I miss the old Gridskipper already.

Another anonymous opinionator chimed in:

Gridskipper, you're dead to me now! You will be remembered fondly as the best place to read about dark restaurants in Berlin and Costume Play bars in Tokyo. But I cannot support your vital organs being transplanted into some horrific Hamptons-centric blog where glib media types compare outfits at P. Diddy's "White Party."

Some other people who actually had the guts to attach their names to their criticism took to Twitter to sound off. Budget Travel magazine, via its "Bud Travel" character, said:

Planning how I'm going to use all my freed-up time now that I no longer have to read Gridskipper.com, thanks to its awful re-launch.

UK travel blogger Darren Cronian was just as harsh:

How to ruin a travel blog--buy it, change the content, don't consult with the readers.

Congrats

Jaunted, good for you for staying awesome throughout your change of administration!

Rosé

No one mocks rosé in the summer and gets away with it! I'm going to run away and start my own pro-pink-wine travel site. A pox on both your houses!

Tacky

The site is just really bad.  And of note is that their articles are attracting no comments, which isn't a good sign.

What's with the Hampton's for one, and is their use of the F word really necessary?

how parochial

How can they possibly sustain this all-Hamptons focus?  I'm completely bored, and it's only week one.

R.I.P.

I'm disappointed in the change as well. Perhaps Curbed's "The Beach" was lacking for traffic and they saw G-skip's built in audience as an easy solution...but it's an awkward move, to say the least. I shed a bourbon-scented tear for the loss of our dear friend.
