Even after that, D. and S. look at each other, stricken, during the wedding, and when the other guests have gone into the reception, Dan tells her to a swooning Death Cab for Cutie soundtrack, "I just think too much has happened. I don't know how to make things go back to where they were."
We understand on a purely narrative level how their breakup bookends the season, creating an arc between Dan's first encounter with his dream girl and their flower-strewn parting. But all we got from this scene was the knowledge that, while his sister may have withdrawn from those circles, Mr. Dan Humphrey is now no better than the people with whom he rubs shoulders. When he tells Serena that "I am the most understanding guy," that's not Brooklyn talking any more.
As for Blair and Chuck, they reconnect at the wedding after Chuck's best-man toast preaches the value of perseverance in love. But despite Blair's breathless declaration that he "brings out the worst in me... and I think I bring out the best in him," these leopards can't change their spots so quickly. They're headed off to Europe together on the Bass private plane, but Blair's headed to France for her gay dad, while Chuck's plan to take Italy in aforementioned vest gets derailed by the appearance of a hot blonde (real-life socialite Lydia Hearst-Shaw). As he gleefully declares, "I'm Chuck Bass." Wow: That's our new motto.
Last night's episode was the last of the summer, so we get a preview of the gang's summer plans: Our favorite Brooklynite proclaims the "Summer of Dan Humphrey," with best friend Vanessa as his partner in crime. Nate and Serena get iced coffees and make each other laugh while she gets over her breakup and he gets over the fact that his dad has run away to Dominica to avoid prison. Jenny--who wasn't invited to the wedding--gets an internship through Parsons... with the designer Eleanor Waldorf. Well, we can't all have a perfect vacation.
KIT, kids. XOXO, Jaunted.
