With nearly 25 miles of public bike paths, the first thing you'll want to do on Sanibel Island is rent a bicycle. (Unfortunately, biking on Captiva isn't as pleasant: There are no paths and just a single two-lane road that's often flooded with cars). Head to Finnimore's Cycle Shop where you can choose from a wide selection of bicycles including one-speeds, tandems or even a surrey for four. One-day rentals start at $14.
Anglers should pay a visit to The Bait Box, where guided fishing trips can be arranged on the Pine Island Sound. You'll be fishing in shallow water so expect to catch snook, flounder and mackerel. Half-day trips on a 17 to 23 foot boat cost $400 or you can rent a rod for $15 and try your luck on the Lighthouse Beach fishing pier. (Non-Florida residents need to purchase a fishing license; The Bait Box has 'em for $17.50 for three days).
For a closer look at the pelicans and herons that inhabit Darling National Wildlife Preserve, book a guided kayak tour from Tarpon Bay Explorers. Along with a naturalist, you'll paddle to Rookery Islands at sunset where you'll watch hundreds of birds return to roost for the night. Tours are $40 for adults, and kids can tag along for $25.
