So what's all the hype? Well the museum has always been a veritable treasure trove of historical relics, but now touch-screen technology and interactive kiosks will make America's history a little less, uh, dry.

Leafing through a rough draft of the Declaration of Independence will be more like scrolling through your iPhone. The 1507 Waldseemüller map--which led to the country being called "America"--is now dusted off and newly interactive.

If you go for Saturday's opening ceremonies be sure to catch Grateful Dead's Mickey Hart as he inducts Mario Andretti, Herbie Hancock, Cokie Roberts and others into the library's ranks of "Living Legends."

In the coming months, watch out for the library's Passports to Knowledge. The clever little gadgets, each with a personalized "bookmarking" barcode, will extend your visit to the LOC: Walk around the library, scan your passport at your favorite exhibits and when you get home you'll be able to learn even more on the library's newly interactive website.

One more cool thing: All this innovation, and yet visiting the library is still free.
