New Zealand's Capital Becoming Hip

March 7, 2008 at 9:25 AM | by | Comments (4)

Of late, our only coverage of the city of Wellington, New Zealand has been our fears about its dangerous airport. That's despite the fact that Wellington is actually the capital city of the country.

But like Canberra in Australia or Brasilia in Brazil, it's one of those capital cities that nobody really knows about. Until now. Statistics from New Zealand's Regional Visitor Monitor are suggesting that Wellington is increasing its popularity as a destination--though they might be going too far by suggesting it's becoming a "must see" city).

Taking a look at the stats, though, we do feel tempted to drop in. In the past year, Wellington's reputation as a place to socialize and have fun has increased from 6 percent to 42 percent--whatever these percentages mean, the jump is definitely high. Visitors say there is good food and wine to be had in Wellington and that it has an appealing cityscape. Sure, you might still have to land at its risky airport, but perhaps that's the adventure travel part of your visit.

Wellington Rocks

Wellington Rocks - and not only at the airport.

Courtenay Place in the centre of the city just jumps until the wee smalls every night. My favourite watering holes are Molly Malone's Irish pub (for the music) and Hummingbird (for the people). The latter is hangout-of-choice for a somewhat more mature tippler - ie. anyone over 28.

It's also a favourite late night haunt of the city's movers and shakers, especially from the capital's corridors of power. Play spot the Cabinet Minister over your cheeky little savvy blanc.

Incidentally the climate is nowhere near as bad as popular belief would have it.  Sure, when it blows it's rough, really rough in a southerly, but on by far the majority of my many trips there the weather has been OK.  In fact, on a good day with sun doing its number it's just magic.

Wellington is Beautiful

I drove from Auckland to Wellington 2 years back for the first time. Since then I've fallen in love with the city! It's a great place to visit or live. I think the downside is the climate though, it's more windy than Auckland and is said to be the second windiest city in the world.
