Jaunted Interview: Talking with Brian Tan

Earlier this week we had a chance to chat with Brian Tan, the founder of a new travel website, Zicasso. We know, right? Another travel site. But after talking with Brian, we were surprised to find out that his service is a little bit different than what's out there.

Unlike an aggregator (think Kayak) or a fluffy info dump (think Fodors), Zicasso is a marketplace that matches travel buyers with travel sellers. Brian calls it a mix of Lending Tree, eBay and online travel planning tools, a description we'd definitely agree with. Basically you put out a bid for the kind of trip you want and tour companies have to come back to you with a good itinerary at a good price--or risk losing a sale to another operator.

Think of it as an interactive version of that list of deals in the back of Budget Travel magazine.

To begin, you decide where you want to go, where you'd like to stay and what you'd like to see. Then you tick boxes and write in a little something, above, to give the tour companies a better idea of your travel style. Punch it all in and it gets sent out to Zicasso's network of providers. The tourism operators then see if they can help you out. Those that can ping you back via Zicasso.

You then have the chance to check over their proposed trips. (You'll get up to four responses per plan you submit.) At this point you can contact the companies for more info, hone itineraries, purchase the package or simply discard it. There's no obligation to buy if you're just planning.

Each company has a profile, so you can also shop for trips that way. Only after people use tour operators can they rate them, so you can be sure the reviews you're reading on the site are legit--hardly the norm on the web these days.

Just Remember
It's not for everyone. Zicasso isn't going after people who just need a flight to London and a hotel for a couple nights: Plenty of websites already do that. Instead, the service is going after people with complicated itineraries and travelers headed to places that are hard to research online.

The site's in private beta testing until Monday, when it'll open to the public.

Live tools

I like the idea, but I also like this website www.EuropeanDestinations.com - which offers the right tools for individual users to actually customize their trip. I think it's better because it takes out the middle man - especially in today's world where everyone wants instant gratification.
