Jaunted in Puerto Rico: The Best Eats

March 5, 2008 at 5:08 PM | by | Comments (0)

Sure you could spend your entire time in Puerto Rico hitting US fast food chains like Subway and Wendy's for lunch, then sit down for dinner at places like Chili's and Outback, but what fun would that be?

Puerto Rican food has plenty to offer, almost too much, but if you find yourself with limited time you at least have to try two things: the seafood and the mofongo.

Raices :: Recinto Sur, Old San Juan
This joint is located right on the south side of Old Town, on restaurant row. All the mofongo dishes are served in a coconut and the atmosphere is light, if not a bit touristy. The mofongo here is first rate though.

So what the heck is it? It is not "stank" or "rank" as urban dictionary may have you believe. It is actually plantains stuffed with meat of your choice--usually shrimp, chicken or steak.

Hot tip: Mofongo goes really well with sangria. No joke!

Rosa's Sea Food :: 536 Tablazo Fajardo 00738
This is the perfect place to try some authentic family style Puerto Rican seafood as you wait for the Fajardo ferry to Vieques. However, be prepared to wait, as this place is on Puerto Rican time when it comes to service.

The shrimp is fresh and excellent, and if you are the adventerous type give the "exclusive" lobster burrito a try.

You'll need a car to get here, but easy parking is available right beside Rosa's.
