Best Beaches in Puerto Rico: North and East Coast

March 4, 2008 at 9:55 AM | by markj | 0 Comments

There are plenty of beaches in Puerto Rico and chances are if you stay at a resort or a hotel, a completely satisfactory beach will be just steps away. However, if you want to break away from the tourists and those waiting to board their cruise liner, rent a car, pick a coast and drive it.

As the day begins to expire you are bound to run into a beach-side BBQ, and maybe even a Lechón de Asado. So where do the locals hang out? Not at the resort or hotel beaches. We stuck to the east of the island and picked our two favorite beaches there.

Luquillo Beach
Hammocks! This beach has hammocks, nuff said right? This golden beach east of San Juan isn't the most popular beach, but you're likely to see street vendors and locals cooking up pork at sunset, which should really hit the spot after a day in the surf. You can get to Luquillo by taking Route 3 east from San Juan, but you can also veer off 26 onto 187 for a bit of a scenic way into Luquillo. Oh, and if you see chickens and even cows free running free near the beach...you know you are in the right spot.

Hot tip: On the weekend locals race their horses on the street here, so traffic can be tough.

Ocean Park Beach
If you ask many of the locals in San Juan where they go when they want to spend some time at the beach they'll probably say "Ocean Park." This beach, nestled between San Juan and Isla Verde is good for swimming or launching a wind surfer. You're unlikely to see many families at this beach, as it attracts more of an adult and single crowd. It isn't South Beach or anything, but it is definitely a local hang out beach, and yes, you are likely to find plenty of well attended beach-side BBQ action later in the day.

Hot tip: Ocean Park is a favorite of gay travelers, but it is by no means a "gay beach."
