We Heart the Boomerang Spratly

March 27, 2008 at 9:15 AM | 0 Comments

With our current obsession about boomerangs being thrown in space by Japanese, this photo of a boomerang-shaped island really grabbed our interest this week. It's one of the 100 plus islands that form the Spratly Islands in the South China Sea, and we would love to travel there, if we could only figure out which country it belongs to.

The story goes that China, Taiwan, Vietnam, Malaysia and the Philippines all lay claim to some or all of the Spratly Islands, so you'd have a hard time figuring out which kind of visa you'd need if you wanted to stop by. As well as being spectacularly beautiful, the islands are rich in gas and oil deposits AND a great fishing spot, so every country with a vague historical or geographical link wants a piece of them.

The Spratlys are currently in the news thanks to a controversial proposal for the Philippine president to stop by. Personally, we think that either the Japanese guy who threw the boomerang in space, or Australian boomerang throwers as a whole, should also stake their claim for this particular island. It's only fair, and there are still more than a hundred to go round.
