If A Butterfly Flaps Its Wings In China...
Environmentally-conscious travelers who still want to manage some long distances on their journeys might be pleased to hear about the new Butterfly Bus service, which takes you overland from Britain to China in just 16 days. By the sounds of it, most of this time is spent on the bus, but "mini breaks" in Warsaw, Moscow and Almaty are part of the trip too.
The Butterfly people--they were first incarnated as the BuddhaBus, but changed their name when they realized that name could offend--are appealing to people with some sense of adventure, of course, and a conscience, since they say the emissions impact of a bus tour like this is 90 percent less than flying.
Green it may be, but it's not exactly cheap, with one-way fares sold for £795 (nearly $1,600). That doesn't include the accommodation each night along the way, for which you'll need at least half as much again, or more if you want to stay in more than basic hotels.
Add to that three visas (another $150) and food costs, and two and a half weeks stuck in a bus hurtling across Europe and Asia doesn't sound so fun after all. But at least you're damaging the environment a bit less.
