Air Greenland Canceling Baltimore Service

Sorry, Greenland. We totally meant to come visit. But now that Air Greenland has shut down its Baltimore-Kangerlussuaq route, it's gonna be a bit harder to come see you.

Why the change?

The reason for the decision is that the route made a loss in its first season of DKK 15.1 million ($3.2 million) and preliminary figures for 2008 predicted expected losses in the two-digit millions. This is partly due to increased costs for fuel and aircraft rental, but also due to the low dollar rate which has reduced American demand for travel abroad.

Heh. When in doubt, blame the worthless American dollar!

We in Baltimore are deeply saddened. (none / 0)

Personally, I was really looking forward to picking up some tupilaks - small grotesque figures carved in narwhal or walrus tooth or reindeer antler - for stocking stuffing next Christmas. I don't how I am going to explain this to my Greenlandic Inuit second-cousin, who I already have trouble communicating with since he only speaks Kalaallisut.

Getting to Greenland is still pretty simple. You just need to connect through Iceland or Copenhagen. Plus, going that way, you can leave from pretty much any city rather than traveling to Baltimore. I was just checking out some packages on experiencegreenland.com.

A friend of mine went to Greenland through Iceland and commented that is was very simple. He left from JFK (New York).
