Shopping in SoCal: LA's Melrose Place

Excuse us while we get all girly on you.

In this edition of the LA Shopping Map, we spurn the pedestrian shopping malls and centers in favor of truly haute couture mecca in Los Angeles. We hesitate to call it a shopping district or anything really with the word "shop" in it because we are not so sure that's what goes on here. After all, does anyone really go on a shopping spree at Carolina Herrera?

Nevertheless, to experience some of LA's best fashion designer offerings head to Melrose Place.

Yes, Melrose Place in Aaron Spelling's world consisted of an apartment complex of 20-something-year-olds who slept with each other and then cried about it. Either that or they went completely postal on each other.

But the real Melrose Place is probably the preferred shopping--eek we had to say it--street for celebs, even more so than Rodeo Drive. Why? Because the design houses are cooler, the offerings unique, the experience is much more private (each store is like a private little home) and there's little to no tourists. (That is until we just told you to go there.)

Melrose Place is located off La Cienega Boulevard, north of the Beverly Center. It's just three blocks long, eventually spilling out into the bigger Melrose Avenue.

Once you make the right-hand turn onto Melrose Place, you can hit up the brand new Monique Llulhier store. Largely a bridal designer, Monique Lluhier also makes some fab evening and cocktail gowns.

Across the street, pop into Marni. We love Marni. We can't afford Marni but we always like to look and this place is always empty.

Skip past the John Frieda salon--the place for celebrity hair as clients include Sheryl Crow, Debi Mazar, Kelly Preston and, randomly, Kelsey Grammar--to Temperly London for the looks from Brit designer, Alice Temperly.

Across the way, gaze in on the fashions of Carolina Herrera--maybe you will see Renee Zellweger in there. You can do the same thing at Oscar de la Renta.

Finally cap off your trip with a visit to the Marc Jacobs store. Note: The Marc by Marc Jacobs store (ie the "cheaper" line) can be found across the street on Melrose Avenue, as can Diane Von Fursternberg, Theory and Nanette Lepore.

The one place you might be able to find something affordable is at the Me & Ro jewelry store at the very end; this one's twice the size of the Manhattan shop. You might find a bangle for under $150.

Other stores to check out would be Santa Maria di Novella, Mulberry's and Sergio Rossi. Also if you're in need of a facial post or pre-shopping, Kate Somerville's Skin Clinic is located here.

For dining, there's the ultra-expensive but ultra-good Bastide. For nightlife, hit up restaurant/after-hours lounge Republic or young Hollywood's fave club, Area.

As for parking: Don't worry, every store has its own valet. Of course.
