New Airports Travel: First Look Inside London's T5

February 25, 2008 at 9:20 AM | 1 Comment

The new Terminal 5 at London Heathrow will open in a little more than two months, and we've just gotten our first look inside thanks to the Guardian.

The departure lounge does indeed look like an awful place for laptop-carrying travelers, with seats far, far away from power outlets. But if you're more into shopping than working, the 112 stores are coming together nicely. Paul Smith and Harrods still have bare shelves, but it won't be long till you can kill your layover in retail bliss.

On the food service side, the terminal will have a heap of restaurants, including Gordon Ramsay's fine dining spot, which overlooks the departures hall and the runways. And luckily, T5 promises that baggage will be well looked after:

The 11 miles of conveyor belts and intelligent baggage carts running on almost 3 miles of rails mean your bag can reach your gate in 15 minutes--particularly impressive given the size of Terminal 5. Meanwhile, the state-of-the-art tracking system means that, at any time, we know where your baggage is.

About time.

    Did someone say shopping?

Retail bliss. My kind of layover. Heathrow was in need of an update though - this will be welcome sparkle for those who have been through the murky gates of the past. Bring on the bling!
